DMT Clear Gas Solutions wins ‘Project of the Year’ Award

Hawai’i Gas and DMT Clear Gas Solutions have won “Project of the Year” at ABC’s Biogas Industry Awards 2019 – October 2019 Madison, WI

At their 19th annual BIOCYCLE REFOR19, the American Biogas Council (ABC) announced Hawai’i Gas and DMT Clear Gas Solutions as the winner of their 2019 “Project of the Year” award. “This project was selected because it’s at the leading edge of a wave that will sweep the nation as more and more gas utilities purchase renewable natural gas (RNG) made from biogas,” said Patrick Serfass, Executive Director of the ABC. “This project, and others like it, promote the recycling of organic material that would otherwise be considered waste into renewable energy. They help to protect our environment, reduce our use of fossil fuels and also create new jobs.”

The 8 th Annual Biogas Industry Awards was a sold-out dinner celebration, presenting 8 awards to biogas projects across the industry, including Projects of the Year, Longevity, Innovation of the Year and the new Up-And-Coming Biogas Project. Winners across the dairy, agricultural, municipal, merchant, and landfill sectors were recognized for their contributions to the growth of the U.S. biogas industry. The City & County of Honolulu’s Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) project with Hawai’i Gas and DMT was bestowed the distinction of the ABC 2019 Biogas Project of the Year Award for the deployment of DMT’s advanced gas cleaning technology on municipal biogas to reduce the carbon footprint of the Honouliuli natural gas system. “We are honored to receive this ABC award from our industry peers and we’re proud of all of our team members who helped make this project a reality,” stated DMT Clear Gas Solutions’ General Manager, Robert Lems. “Both Hawai’i Gas and DMT share similar missions to create sustainable solutions for our customers. We are thrilled to have worked with Hawai’i Gas on this groundbreaking project and look forward to the future with this valuable partnership.” “It is truly an honour that our RNG facility was selected for the Project of the Year Award,” noted Richard DeGarmo, Director of Renewable Energy & Capital Projects, Hawai’i Gas. “We are grateful for the recognition received and for our partnership with DMT to make this innovative project a reality.”

In December 2018, Hawai’i Gas became the first in the state to capture and process biogas into RNG at the Honouliuli WWTP facility, which produces approximately 800,000 therms of energy per year, enough gas for more than 6,000 homes. This first-of-its-kind project is equivalent to eliminating the need for nearly 15,000 barrels of oil and will reduce greenhouse gases by the amount produced by 400 cars annually. “Ensuring that all families have access to affordable, reliable and clean energy are important goals. Our RNG project is an important step toward achieving these goals, while at the same time, working towards meeting Hawai’i’s carbon neutrality goals for 2045,” said Alicia Moy, President and CEO, Hawai’i Gas. “RNG uses existing pipeline infrastructure to deliver greener fuels to our customers while providing a new revenue source to the city.” Hawai’i Gas and DMT Clear Gas Solutions win “Project of the Year” at ABC’s Biogas Industry Awards 2019 Additionally, this RNG project will provide Hawai’i with 3% of renewable natural gas. By selling the biogas to Hawai’i Gas, the City and County of Honolulu generates approximately $1.6 million of revenue per year.

“The ability to transform our sewage into RNG will make Honolulu more resilient and sustainable, and I congratulate Hawai‘i Gas and DMT for being recognized as the ‘Project of the Year’ by such a highly regarded trade group like the American Biogas Council,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. “It’s our hope the project at Honouliuli can be repeated by Hawai‘i Gas at other wastewater facilities across O‘ahu as this is the type of public-private partnership that makes good sense for our island home.” About Hawai’i Gas Hawai’i Gas is Hawai’i’s only government-franchised, full-service gas company manufacturing and distributing gas in Hawai’i. The company’s market includes Hawai’i’s approximately 1.4 million residents and nearly 8 million visitors. Hawai’i Gas manufactures synthetic natural gas, or SNG, for its utility customers on O‘ahu, and distributes liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG (propane), to utility, tank and bottled gas customers throughout the state’s six primary islands. It also produces renewable natural gas at Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant on O’ahu.
