DMT Clear Gas Solutions wins ‘Project of the Year’ Award
Hawaiâi Gas and DMT Clear Gas Solutions have won âProject of the Yearâ at ABCâs Biogas Industry Awards 2019 – October 2019 Madison, WI
At their 19th annual BIOCYCLE REFOR19, the American Biogas Council (ABC) announced Hawaiâi Gas and DMT Clear Gas Solutions as the winner of their 2019 âProject of the Yearâ award. âThis project was selected because itâs at the leading edge of a wave that will sweep the nation as more and more gas utilities purchase renewable natural gas (RNG) made from biogas,â said Patrick Serfass, Executive Director of the ABC. âThis project, and others like it, promote the recycling of organic material that would otherwise be considered waste into renewable energy. They help to protect our environment, reduce our use of fossil fuels and also create new jobs.â
The 8 th Annual Biogas Industry Awards was a sold-out dinner celebration, presenting 8 awards to biogas projects across the industry, including Projects of the Year, Longevity, Innovation of the Year and the new Up-And-Coming Biogas Project. Winners across the dairy, agricultural, municipal, merchant, and landfill sectors were recognized for their contributions to the growth of the U.S. biogas industry. The City & County of Honoluluâs Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) project with Hawaiâi Gas and DMT was bestowed the distinction of the ABC 2019 Biogas Project of the Year Award for the deployment of DMTâs advanced gas cleaning technology on municipal biogas to reduce the carbon footprint of the Honouliuli natural gas system. âWe are honored to receive this ABC award from our industry peers and weâre proud of all of our team members who helped make this project a reality,â stated DMT Clear Gas Solutionsâ General Manager, Robert Lems. âBoth Hawaiâi Gas and DMT share similar missions to create sustainable solutions for our customers. We are thrilled to have worked with Hawaiâi Gas on this groundbreaking project and look forward to the future with this valuable partnership.â “It is truly an honour that our RNG facility was selected for the Project of the Year Award,â noted Richard DeGarmo, Director of Renewable Energy & Capital Projects, Hawaiâi Gas. âWe are grateful for the recognition received and for our partnership with DMT to make this innovative project a reality.â
In December 2018, Hawaiâi Gas became the first in the state to capture and process biogas into RNG at the Honouliuli WWTP facility, which produces approximately 800,000 therms of energy per year, enough gas for more than 6,000 homes. This first-of-its-kind project is equivalent to eliminating the need for nearly 15,000 barrels of oil and will reduce greenhouse gases by the amount produced by 400 cars annually. âEnsuring that all families have access to affordable, reliable and clean energy are important goals. Our RNG project is an important step toward achieving these goals, while at the same time, working towards meeting Hawaiâiâs carbon neutrality goals for 2045,â said Alicia Moy, President and CEO, Hawaiâi Gas. âRNG uses existing pipeline infrastructure to deliver greener fuels to our customers while providing a new revenue source to the city.â Hawaiâi Gas and DMT Clear Gas Solutions win âProject of the Yearâ at ABCâs Biogas Industry Awards 2019 Additionally, this RNG project will provide Hawaiâi with 3% of renewable natural gas. By selling the biogas to Hawaiâi Gas, the City and County of Honolulu generates approximately $1.6 million of revenue per year.
âThe ability to transform our sewage into RNG will make Honolulu more resilient and sustainable, and I congratulate Hawaiâi Gas and DMT for being recognized as the âProject of the Yearâ by such a highly regarded trade group like the American Biogas Council,â said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. âItâs our hope the project at Honouliuli can be repeated by Hawaiâi Gas at other wastewater facilities across Oâahu as this is the type of public-private partnership that makes good sense for our island home.â About Hawaiâi Gas Hawaiâi Gas is Hawaiâiâs only government-franchised, full-service gas company manufacturing and distributing gas in Hawaiâi. The companyâs market includes Hawaiâiâs approximately 1.4 million residents and nearly 8 million visitors.
