INTERN: Evaluation of a (bio)technological process for the conversion of residual biomass to (precursors for) fuels or chemicals

Internship objective

The primary objective of this internship is to evaluate a high-potential (bio)technological process for the conversion of residual biomass to (precursors for) fuels and/or chemicals. For this evaluation procedure we use the stage-gate model. This model is meant to develop new systems (i.e. products) . The intern brings the new technology concept from stage 1 to stage 3. In this stepwise process, various multidisciplinary efforts are required to make progress, including marketing, sales, product development and engineering. For the intern, it is important to acquire relevant information about the technology. Some information may be publicly available but it is very likely that part of the required information should be actively retrieved by e.g. direct contact with agro-food industries, suppliers, scientists etc. The intern systematically collect this information, reports findings and follows the proposed model.

What do we expect?

The following documents have to be made in your internship

  • Primary Focus Markets
    • Where can the technology be sold?
  • 6W-analysis for customers:
    • Who is involved in buying and consuming?
    • What are their choice criteria?
    • When do they buy/use the products?
    • Why do they buy/use the product?
    • Where do they buy?
    • How do they use the product?
  • Competitor analysis
  • Scientific landscape – list of literature
  • Intellectual property – list of patents
  • List of requirements/Technology selection/House of Quality (HoQ )
    • Compare the chosen technology with alternative technologies
  • SWOT (Strengths, weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats)-analysis
  • PFD (Process Flow Diagram)
  • Technical & Functional Feasibility
  • Mass and energy balances
  • P&ID – Process and Instrumentation Diagram
  • Equipment List
  • Preliminary Business Case

What are we looking for?

The ideal intern has a background in (bio)chemical engineering / environmental sciences or related. To apply for this internship project, please email your cv and motivation letter. Please also include the period you are available and the requested duration of the internship (between 4 and 6 months). The internship starts in September 2020.

What do we offer?
